Turning up the Heat

I'm normally a strong supporter of President Bush on most issues. However, when it comes to his immigration policy and his idea of "border security", we part ways. That's why I strongly support the initiative recently announced by Minuteman border watch leader Chris Simcox.

In a daring move, Simcox has "turned up the heat" on the President by attempting to force the President to finally address border security along the vast Mexican border.

Simcox, in an ultimatum to the president, has challenged the President to deploy military reserves and the National Guard to the Arizona border by May 25. If he doesn't, Simcox says that by the Memorial Day weekend, Minuteman Civil Defense Corps volunteers and supporters will break ground to start erecting fencing privately.

"We have had landowners approach," Simcox said in an interview. "We've been working on this idea for a while. We're going to show the federal government how easy it is to build these security fences, how inexpensively they can be built when built by private people and free enterprise."

This poses an interesting dilemma for the President, the House and the Senate. If things don't begin to move when congress reconvenes, the Minutemen may cram this issue down their throat and make the politicians in Washington deal with this issue, once and for all.

"You may have to deal with a situation where private property owners erect their own fences and may be faced with the president sending the National Guard to prevent them from protecting their private property," Simcox said.

As for me.......I'd like to see that happen. Maybe that would bring the issue front and center and we'd actually see some progress made to secure our nations borders. Once we deal with the mess along the Mexican border, then we can turn our attention to our Northern neighbor, where the problem is just as bad, if not worse, but doesn't receive anywhere near the media attention.
